The cost for Fox in the fake trades proposed feels low, no? Considering the haul zero-time all-star Mikal Bridges was worth? If I’m the Kings, why would I do a trade if not for a meaningful package of picks and a serious upside young player?
I think while Fox's resume is certainly of a higher quality than Bridges there are different factors at play that contributed to Bridges going for more picks than you would expect:
1. Knicks had to pay an extra tax to get Brooklyn to trade with them (there had not been a Knicks/Nets trade since 1983 before)
2. Bridges' reputation (accurate or note) as the archetype player teams covet (high level 3/D with potential creation juice)
3. The Knicks did not include a single young player in the trade meaning more picks were required
4. His contract was very below market value with given his age and archetype (see #2).
5. Knicks were likely more incentivized to trade more knowing Brunson would be more likely to sign a below market deal.
6. Nets are planning to tank and don't require any win now contributions which I believe Sacramento likely would want.
Whether these factors actually make the deal worth it is certainly up for debate, but I believe that is why that trade likely isn't a great barometer for what might happen in a Fox trade. I could be totally wrong though (I usually am).
You make a good observation, but the cards are in Fox’s hands. If he is specific about his destination and willing to not sign an extension and go through free agency it severely diminishes the King’s ability to gin up a bidding war and risks him leaving for nothing. On the flip side, the Spurs waiting for free agency is a significant risk, as another team like the Heat may be able to swoop in and convince him to sign there. Also Kangz.
Of course. But while players who publicly request a trade always diminish their team’s leverage, Fox is young, really good, mostly drama-free, and doesn’t have a significant injury history. Even players known to be available with that profile can command way more in returns. Donovan Mitchell was in more of a strongly-implied trade demand situation, but even so he got an absolute monstrous haul back. Laurie + a crapload of picks.
A more apt description of a trade may be 2018 Kawhi. More injury history, more drama, but significantly better player. Raptors didn’t get any reassurances of an extension, everyone knew he had eyes for LA. The Raptors pulled the trigger anyways, and the Spurs got Derozan and Poeltl (I think? Whatever it was, it wasn’t a lot). There was no haul to be had in those circumstances, and may not here either.
I think Mitchell had more contract left, which always plays a deciding factor in these deals. Also that summer was insane. Gobert set the market! And maybe that happens again, but there is a significant chance the draft return is a fart in the wind, not a Presti/Ainge special.
It is going to be so incredibly odd to see Griner in another WNBA jersey. In an era where players move all the time, the Mercury have been remarkably consistent about building around 2 players over the last decade. It was inevitable that it should end but it feels like the last gasp of that sort of thing.
I was thinking the same thing about "Lil Buzi Vert" (lol) and then he promptly did this the night before last, so maybe I was off base and we're going to get the (trademark pending) GreatWhiteDunkOff between he and McClung. He has at least one fan locked down (see, child in video)!
Woah woah woah woah woah... Are you a Terp? If so, I've been reading your work since pre-Twitter and somehow never knew that! I'm class of 09 and think we have our best squad since the Jalen Smith squad that was robbed of the tournament by COVID, would love to hear your thoughts

Not a Terp, just a childhood fan of Maryland. Walt Williams! Joe Smith!
Aaron Gordon was robbed and the rest is karma.
Is Fox a Heat Culture? Fascinating the cost is the same.
